Victory at Vetch Field would be enough to ensure that United would regain the First Division status that they had lost in 1960. They achieved that target with spectacular success as they departed with both points after an emphatic victory, which prompted Chairman Harry Reynolds to buy beers for any Leeds United supporters who had made the long trip.

Manager Don Revie, who had welded together a strong squad, sprang a surprise by giving a debut to Terry Cooper on the left-wing, after Albert Johanneson had been ruled out through injury. Cooper, who was destined to become an international star of the 1970’s after moving to full-back, supplied the cross which centre-forward Alan Peacock gleefully hammered in to set United on their victory, after fifteen minutes.

Peacock, a £53,000 signing from Middlesbrough in February, who had added more weight to United’s end-of-the-season promotion push, struck again four minutes later after Johnny Giles had flicked on a Bobby Collins corner. United were now in full flow and it came as no surprise when they made it three with only thirty-four minutes gone. This time it was Johnny Giles who rifled in Cooper’s corner via Swansea defender Roy Evans.

Revie, a superstitious character, had banned the purchase of champagne before the game just in case United were beaten. So, after the match players and officials scoured the pubs of Swansea hunting down bottles of bubbly for the train journey back to Yorkshire.

In their remaining games United drew with Plymouth Argyle at Elland Road, then won 2-0 at Charlton Athletic, with another brace from Alan Peacock, to wrap up the Second Division Championship Trophy and embark on a golden era for the club.
